Siding in Bellingham: Materials, Cost Factors & When to Replace

Siding is your home’s raincoat — and in Bellingham, it earns that title. The right material and a proper installation protect everything behind it from our long, wet Pacific Northwest winters. Here’s how to choose, and how to know when it’s time to replace.

The best siding materials for Bellingham’s climate

Fiber cement (e.g. James Hardie)

The go-to for the PNW. Fiber cement resists moisture, rot, and insects, holds paint well, and won’t feed the mildew our climate loves. It’s low-maintenance and durable — a strong default for most Bellingham homes.

Engineered wood

A lighter, warmer-looking alternative that installs quickly and takes paint nicely. Good performance in our climate when it’s installed and sealed correctly — flashing and cut-edge sealing matter here.

Vinyl

The budget-friendly option — no painting, easy upkeep. It’s a reasonable choice, though it offers less of the premium look many Bellingham homeowners want and can be less forgiving on older, out-of-square homes.

Cedar / natural wood

Beautiful and quintessentially Northwest, but it demands the most maintenance in our wet climate — regular staining or sealing to fend off moisture and rot. Best for homeowners who love the look and will keep up with it.

Signs it’s time to replace your siding

Repainting only works if the siding underneath is sound. Look for:

  • Warping, buckling, or cupping boards
  • Soft spots or rot, especially low on walls and around windows
  • Persistent mildew that returns no matter how often you wash
  • Cracked, gapping, or missing sections letting water behind the wall
  • Peeling paint that returns quickly after repainting — often a moisture problem, not a paint problem
  • Rising energy bills, a sign the wall assembly is failing

If you’re mostly seeing tired color, a repaint may be enough — see our exterior painting guide. If the boards themselves are failing, it’s time for new siding.

What drives siding cost in Whatcom County

Siding is quoted per project because the variables are big:

  • Material — vinyl is the most budget-friendly; fiber cement and quality engineered wood sit higher; cedar is a premium.
  • Home size and stories — more square footage and height means more labor and staging.
  • Prep and repairs — rot, sheathing, or moisture damage found during tear-off adds scope.
  • Trim, flashing, and details — proper water management around windows and corners is where quality installs earn their keep.

Because those swings are real, the most reliable number is a free in-home assessment. For how remodeling budgets come together in our market, see the 2026 Bellingham Home Remodeling Cost & Trend Guide.
